Green to the Last Bite...of Chicken. A Look at Conventional Chicken Farming vs Small Farms. Recipe: Coq Au Vin

BECKI WALKER / Thursday, May 14, 2009 05:40 PM

Becki Walker writes about farmers market manners on Fridays and crafts recipes. We're running a recipe a day until May 22nd.

I consider myself a somewhat philosophical person, as do, I imagine, a goodly number of people who read this blog.  Chewing over questions in our brains is a good exercise for our mental mastication muscles, but I’ve taken the teeth out of one question: for the purposes of this blog, the chicken comes after the egg. Yesterday we ventured into the shelled world, today we’ll focus on our feathered friends. More...

'The Guide Girls' Deal Out Green Tips with Sass

CARISSA WODEHOUSE / Friday, April 24, 2009 05:17 PM

The Guide Girls are Winnie and Maxine, two sassy and silly women who will walk you through basic sustainability habits with crass jokes and occasional knickers shots. For those that are hard to win over, or have just heard the same maxims too many times, their comedy is a good dose of fun.

If you prefer your information via video, their Guide Girl Instructisodes are all available at their site or YouTube. I recommend starting with How to Compost with the Guide Girls.

For readers, try their Facty Sheetoids, printable PDFs that answer the tough questions about green choices, such as How to Change a Lightbulb: "Last time I tried one of these bulbs I looked ill" goes one question. Their answer: "You fool; you probably bought a 'day light' or 'bright white' bulb. Choose 'soft white' and the light will be softer and more yellow." Or, "I am fancy and live in a castle filled with antique chandeliers."

You can find the fancy answer and more at TheGuideGirls.com.

Green Question: How Can I Tell What Fish is the Best Choice?

ECOMETRO EDITORS / Friday, April 3, 2009 05:01 PM

Information on your seafood can be unclear and just plain fishy, so turn to a reliable source such as The Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch. They provide these free resources to help you determine which fish is from the best sources and is not overfished. Use these at the grocery store or restaurant.
  • Select a Seafood Pocket Guide Our longtime favorites, these handy guides are easy to print and carry in your wallet, or if you own our books you'll find a tear-out copy inside. Select the guide for your region and give copies to dinner dates.
  • Mobile.SeafoodWatch.org Use your phone to view the Seafood Pocket Guides online.
  • iPhone Seafood Watch App A free application for iPhone and iPod Touch users, with Pocket Guide information and much, much more.
  • Text the Fish Phone Send a text message to 30644 with FISH and the name of your fish in question. Save the number in your phonebook for easy reference. The Blue Ocean Institute will text back its assessment and better alternatives if your fish is at risk. For example, we texted "fish bluefin tuna" and received this message: "Atlantic bluefine tuna (RED) significant environmental concerns; endangered species; HEALTH ADVISORY: High mercury contamination."

Green Trends: The Chanel Segway, Bicycle, and Bejewelled Pant Clip. Why I'm Pro Bling for Bikes.

CARISSA WODEHOUSE / Thursday, February 26, 2009 03:58 PM

Chanel fashion house released a black bicycle with a quilted leather chain guard and pannier/purse for $12,000 back in 2007, because Coco loved sports. Courtney Cox sent one to Jennifer Aniston, and then it dropped off the map. Naturally, Chanel followed up with a jeweled pant clip.

But the Chanel Segway? This I have a hard time with, in part because I still--rarely--have to pass one in the bike lane, which I'm loathe to share. On the one hand, Segways are electric, an alternative to cars, and probably deserve to be more popular in dense cities. On the other hand, they're difficult to take seriously unless there's a cop riding it.

The price has not been released, but the question has: Who will buy this?

And sp-sp-spendy as they may be, I'm in favor of flashy bikes. Here's why. More...

Now It’s Even Easier to Use Compact Fluorescent Bulbs and Recycle for Free

SCOTT THOMSEN / Monday, November 10, 2008 04:45 PM

In my job I attend a lot of community events to share the same energy conservation message THIS SPACE is dedicated to: simple steps can cut your electricity use and keep a few extra bucks in your pocket.

One of the best and easiest options is to switch from incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs. They use about a third of the electricity and last up to 10 years, which can save as much as $33 in energy costs over the life of the bulb. More...

I Didn’t Know You Could Recycle THAT: Toothpaste tubes, VHS tapes, and more

Rethink Reread Recycle
JENNIFER MORKUNAS, CELILO GROUP MEDIA / Tuesday, October 7, 2008 04:12 PM

Even though it is not one of my favorite things to do, it’s become sort of a hobby to reach into the garbage and pull out something that should have been placed in the recycle bin. I find myself saying to no one in particular, “Didn’t you know this liquid soap bottle is made out of low-density polyethylene #4? Hello! Even curbside recycling takes that!”

While most people are aware that items like used batteries and old cell phones can be recycled, there are a host of other every day things where the thought that it’s recyclable may not even occur. It may take a little extra effort (or spending a little on postage), but things like used toothpaste tubes, and even old cassette and VHS tapes- can definitely be recycled. More...

Monsters in My Closet: What's the Carbon Footprint for Fashion?

CARISSA WODEHOUSE / Thursday, August 14, 2008 09:39 PM

What the heck is eco anything, these days, let alone something as ambiguous to begin with as fashion? Good question. I don’t know. I gather that few people really do. I monitor my annual carbon footprint, bike to work, avoid excessive plastic purchases, unplug appliances. But the footprint of my fashion haunts me. Pesticide use in cotton, let alone the synthetics with petroleum bases...it's hard to shoulder that. Yet there is no fashion impact calculator, no quick online test. This will be my attempt at one, and exploration of alternatives.

What am I getting into? More...

Project Runway Green Episode!

MAMABIRD / Tuesday, July 29, 2008 07:00 PM

Every season of project runway (and I’ve watched them all twice) has challenges where they deal with uncommon fabrics. One of my favorite season three challenges was when they took the contestants to a recycling center and had them compose outfits from the "waste" materials they found there. That brought a win to the fabulous Michael Knight and a pass-over-but-should-have-won to the genius and overall winner of the season Jeffrey Sebelia. Michael created a lovely ensemble from peanut sacks with a wrap made of plastic bag. Jeffrey created an incredible dress out of paper, but, in my opinion did not win because he used so much paint to create the final product (including the cutest tromp l'oeil belt), while Michael used the products as-is.   More...

Review: Eco-Me Baby Kit

ECOMETRO EDITORS / Tuesday, November 20, 2007 11:43 PM

Review by ecometro blogger Hillary Ryan. Read her blog Baby Greens at Seattle ecometro.com.

Eco-Me specialized in 100% do-it-yourself cleaning kits. They carry a line of cleaning kits to help people make their own natural, non-toxic, chemical-free products including: Eco-Me Home, Body, Baby, Dog and Cat. I was drawn to the product concept of 100% natural baby products made at home since so many baby items aren't as gentle on the skin as they could be. More...
