High performance outerwear is often made in a way that is damaging to the environment. At Midwest Mountaineering, you can avoid petroleum based, synthetic gear in favor of Merino wool by Smartwool and Icebreaker. Locally owned since 1970, they were been named by Backpacker Magazine as the number one retailer in the nation for growth, and donate 10% of their profit to wilderness and environmental causes. Know someone with enough gear? Give a gift certificate for repair, the greenest choice.

Maybe not as large of a selection as some of the super stores, but they have really high quality stuff so you don't really need all those other choices, right? I found a great pair of hiking boots and a very warm winter coat there for a good price and the customer service was great. They were very knowledgeable and helped me decide what I needed.

I admit to being an REI member, but prefer the local, personal touches at Midwest. The staff is very knowledgable and an incredible resource. They have great sale and clearance prices year round. I enjoy their selection of Bridgedale wool socks.

We used to be die-hard REI fans. No more. Midwest has incredible selection, including Marmot and Icebreaker which you can't find much of at REI. They run great sales, particularly the employee garage sale (get there early) and the expos. And they really, really know what they're talking about. Happy to support the local outdoor Mecca.
