Green to the Last Bite...of Manners at the Market

BECKI WALKER / Friday, May 15, 2009 07:32 PM

Earlier this month, I celebrated one of my favorite holidays – the beginning of farmers market season!  What with the rising prices of oil and gas, and the popularity of books like Animal, Vegetable, Miracle and The Omnivore’s Dilemma, plenty of people are thinking more about buying local and organic.  That being said, sometimes farmers markets can be a daunting place, especially for newbie visitors.  There are sometimes strange fruits and vegetables, crowds of people you might not know, and masses of dogs and children.

How do you navigate the market?  And how can you be sure you’re buying something you want?  In this article, I’ll take you on a guided tour through market day with some simple lessons about market etiquette and include questions you can pose to farmers to make sure you’re getting what you want.

Sustainable Changes: Use It Up, Wear It Out, Make It Do, or Do Without

NATHALIE HARDY / Wednesday, February 25, 2009 06:43 PM

I’ve loved words and writing for as long as I can remember. And I’ve hated math and science for equally as long. Luckily, serving as my son’s tour guide to the planet has rejuvenated my interest in life science, but, I must admit, I still feel intimated by most things numbers and all things science.

So when people get to talking about the environment and carbon emissions, ozone gases and such, I tune out a little bit. Or, to be more accurate, I feel a twinge of guilt mixed with a dash of ignorance and then check out of the conversation completely. More...

The Power of the Traveler

JAKE HAUPERT / Monday, July 21, 2008 01:16 PM

Have you ever thought: ‘Boy, I’d like to change the world!’?  I’m sure we could brainstorm several pages of things we could do (and hopefully are doing) to change the world, but I’d like to focus on the power that travelers have every time they make a choice on where to go and what to do.  The travel industry operates under similar economic rules that most businesses must follow: if no one wants your product or service you either change or you die.  Sure, marketing can help you convince your customers that they want you, but, especially with sustainable traveling, most businesses are trying to catch up with the trends.  The new green revolution has incredible potential to change the world, or it could be too little too late.  The consumer has the ability to chart the course of this new journey by asking tough questions on every purchase (or choosing not to purchase) he or she makes.  When traveling, when was the last time you asked if the food served at the restaurant is local and organic?  What about the water consumption of the lodges.  Or even assurance that the labor standards do not allow for exploitation of the folks who clean the hotel or maintain the grounds.  If more people started asking these tough questions it wouldn’t take long for hotels and restaurants and others in the travel industry to start paying attention to these and other sustainability measures.  Better yet, if consumers decided to only support the businesses that met such values, it wouldn’t take long for there to be an industry standard.

I am not one opposed to government regulation, but the speed of government does not usually match the pace we need to take to address the large environmental and social justice problems of our time.  Writing a letter to your representative is always encouraged, but when you vote with your dollars there is a chance your say can reach those in industries quite a bit quicker than any law or regulation.

As a company, EverGreen Escapes is working to do some of this homework for you.  Every partner we choose to partner with must demonstrate how they are working towards sustainability.  As time goes on, those that live up to this commitment will continue to get our business and those that fall short will not.  Currently, we are researching how we can be carbon neutral and waste free.  This is not only what we demand of ourselves, but what our customers are demanding of us.  Because of YOUR commitment to sustainability, you are holding us accountable and pushing us towards the cutting edge.  Keep up the good work.

“Better Living Through Denial”

Bumper Sticker Life
DIANA CRANE / Friday, October 26, 2007 03:49 PM

“Time for a family meeting.” These are the five most dreaded words uttered at my house, occupied by a husband, two teenagers, two cats, and a dog … all highly skilled at avoidance tactics. But the word certain to elicit groans and sudden recall of urgent needs to be elsewhere … is “sustainability,” dubbed the “S” word.

Recently I went for broke and declared the S word the topic of a family chat. A bumper sticker that could describe the response is: “Better living through denial.” Yeah, better for them. Denial is no longer an option for me.

I should disclose upfront that I work for PCC Natural Markets, a Seattle-based natural foods cooperative. Five years ago — pre-PCC — sustainability was not in my vocabulary. A junk food mom who could barely define organic, I joined PCC and, since I do the household buying, so did my family. After a few weeks at PCC I started introducing lots of new terms at the dinner table … genetically modified, irradiation, trans fat … the result of working with people who are genuinely passionate about all things natural.

I’ve transitioned gradually from the dark side — one organic- shade-grown-and-fairly-traded cup of coffee at a time — and I’ve discovered that incorporating sustainable choices in my life isn’t as hard as I’d feared. I’ve not yet tried hemp milk in my coffee, I don’t drive a hybrid, and I don’t pee in the dark to save electricity, but I do recycle all my Diet Coke cans, bring my own bags for groceries, and try to get my family to embrace the S word.

Back to the meeting. I quoted a bumper sticker I saw on a truck during a farm tour I took last year: “Compost. A rind is a terrible thing to waste.” It’s no surprise that composting is not a natural impulse for teenagers just beginning to venture out into the world, far from the warm, familiar source of comfort and possibilities (the TV, not their “parental units,” as we’re described to their friends). After all, composting may be a fine idea for people who actually like to do stuff like that, but the garbage disposal is a lot handier and if it clogs from too much sticky rice forced down the drain, dad knows how to fix it.

I was tenacious and declared a composting campaign, promising we’d have even more fun than our last family fire drill. (Well, fun for them; I had to be sedated after finding two smoke alarms had been disabled by my son because low batteries made them beep and woke him up.) We downloaded some composting information (great stuff at seattletilth.org and cedar-grove.com and seattle.gov/util) and will begin our adventure in composting this weekend.

Next up is a “green” household audit covering all the ways we can conserve energy, reduce waste, and still keep peace in the house. I already have a bumper sticker in mind for that. Stay tuned. More...
