The Sustainable 2010 Winter Olympics

ECOMETRO SEATTLE TEAM / Tuesday, February 16, 2010 12:40 PM

By Erin Russell

The Olympic spirit is something I find contagious whenever the games come around. It is always history in the making and the few days that I have been at Whistler last week were no different.

History in the Making

When Vancouver won the bid for the winter Olympics, they made a pledge to have the first sustainable games in history. More...

Gifts from the Heart and Hands

Seattle Staff Blog

-Jill Amsberry, Community Outreach Manager

'Tis the season to stress about long holiday shopping lists and ever-increasing credit card debt, at least if you are anything close to the average American. For me, this is the time of year when I struggle to reconcile my anti-consumptive aspirations with my desire to honor my loved ones with gifts from the heart. I'm an instinctive DIY-er, but a frenetically busy lifestyle and a propensity to procrastinate doesn't always leave time for handmade gifts. More...

I Didn’t Know You Could Recycle THAT: Food Utensils, Straws, Chopsticks and More

Rethink Reread Recycle
JENNIFER MORKUNAS, CELILO GROUP MEDIA / Monday, June 8, 2009 07:09 PM

It’s the little things in life…that add up. When ordering food to go, how many times were you given a pile of extra plasticware and napkins? This is not to mention those pesky clamshell food containers themselves. In the ongoing shift away from petroleum-based plastic products, you may have noticed some plastic items now have “Compostable” printed on them. Learn about how to differentiate between biodegradable and compostable, and consider choosing bioplastics and other earth-friendly tableware and food packaging.  More...

Recycling Take-Out Containers Used for Leftovers

ECOMETRO EDITORS / Tuesday, April 28, 2009 08:10 PM

Chow, the food site, has a great new article called How Green Is Your Takeaway Container. You can take reusable containers, such as Tupperware or popular metal tiffins, to restaurants and carts and ask them to use it instead of plastic take-out. Additionally,  ask them not to include a plastic bag or plastic silverware, and bring your own reusable utensil.

Here's the scoop on our local recycling:

Clam shell/plastic containers: No. At Chinook Book we gather our clamshells and deliver bunches along with other difficult to recycle items. AtWork! is a local company that accepts clam shells for recycling, along with most transfer stations. More...

Cogs and Creativity: Resource Revival Turns Bike Parts into Bike Arts.

MEREDITH SORENSEN / Wednesday, May 14, 2008 05:56 PM

I moved to Portland for two reasons: 1) so I could commute by bike, and 2) so I could work with trash and recycling.  Imagine my joy last weekend when I met Graham Bergh, the founder and president of Resource Revival, Inc. -- a company that makes bottle openers, pictures frames, clocks, wine racks and signs out of old bike parts (mostly chains and cogs).  They give new meaning to re-cycling, and local Puget Sound bike shops are participating. More...

Recycled Hypocrisy

new to green?
KRISTEN PROCTOR / Tuesday, November 6, 2007 12:17 PM

I was in New Orleans a couple weeks ago and ended up at a local jazz club called Snug Harbor. There was a lovely trio of women singers, accompanied by a piano and trumpet, performing that night. One of the women was drinking out of a thick 40 ounce, neon pink, barbell-shaped plastic cup, with an equally slaptastic straw. It wasn’t a particularly unusual sight, after all, even though it wasn’t Mardi Gras season. But after taking a sip, she hoisted it up like a trophy, lamenting, ‘I was in another city last weekend and they didn’t have any ‘to-go’ cups like we do here! What’s up with that?” More...
