Practically every special exhibit is based on a TV show or character. Bob the Builder. Arthur. Sesame Street. Really? Is that how you get kids to learn and explore? It's sad to see such a wonderful space used to such poor effect.

There's really nothing good to say about Powell's that wouldn't be an understatement. Here are three observations: 1) An opportunity to work within an easy walk of Powell's is sufficient reason to change jobs. Maybe even change career fields. 2) House guests who stay too long? Drop them off at Powell's and you may never see them again. 3) Powell's smells the way a bookstore should.

A month ago I would have rated Vita Cafe "Excellent", but then they moved into a new building without outside seating. It used to be the best restaurant in Portland to take kids, because in addition to great food and interesting wait-staff, the outside space was really welcoming for kids. Now the food is still great, and the wait-staff are still interesting, but the space is not kid-friendly at all. Bummer.

This is my favorite New Seasons store, and New Seasons is my favorite grocer by far. Prices are generally lower than at Whole Foods, there are more organic choices, and the produce is downright beautiful. The staff are friendly and helpful, and they are nice to my kids. As with all New Seasons, customer service policies are excellent. The dining space is convenient and well-maintained. The coffee is Stumptown, and the donuts are Tonalli's and Voodoo. The BBQ shack in the parking lot is icing on the cake.

The Community Cycling Center provides bike repair and bike safety classes to low-income youth. They also fix my family's bikes and sell me bike accessories. They provide free air, replacement tubes, and loaner tools. They sell used bikes as well. The costs are very reasonable. The staff is friendly and not condescending. They have a great logo. I think they're an enormous asset to the community and the city.
