My Take On What It Means To Be Eco-Conscious

confessions of a green wannabe
NATHALIE HARDY / Wednesday, March 18, 2009 05:32 PM

Though I’m not typically a “Pollyanna” type, I find myself wondering if there isn’t a bright side to this economic downslide. I know I’m not alone in needing to find the silver lining to keep from getting depressed by reading, hearing and talking about all the different ways the sky is falling.

Is it falling though? Really? Or are we just coming to an inevitable crossroads forcing us to choose which direction we want to go as individuals and as a society? And is it really such a bad thing to come to terms with who you really are and who you really want to be?

For my money, what there is of it, we have an opportunity—and a responsibility—to navigate ourselves out of this economic mess in a way that is sustainable for future generations. This means really changing the way we do things. Real change, people. More...

Uncovering Fair Trade Treasures at Ten Thousand Villages Portland

CHERYL JANIS / Friday, January 2, 2009 07:26 PM

After dusting off my snow packed boots and entering the fair trade gurus Ten Thousand Villages (coupon) Portland store located in the center of the Pearl District (914 NW Everett Street), I suddenly felt myself traveling through exotic lands far, far away. The rich colors in the fabrics of Pakistan and the dark wood grains of Indonesian wood tables made my heart sing.

I could almost feel the beating heart of the various nations represented in the vast array of beautifully handcrafted home accessories and furnishings.

Behind the volunteer-based non-profit organization that boasts 150 stores nationwide, and 50 in Canada, is an intimate story connected to each fairly traded and sustainably handcrafted item, that when purchased serves to help others (often women) in third world countries earn a living wage. That translates to the ability to make a huge difference in the lives of others with little cost to you and I.

Here are some highlights. More...
