Honest Eats. Recipe: Curried Pumpkin Fettuccini with Heirloom Tomato Chutney

Honest Eats
ERIC ROBERTSON / Wednesday, November 12, 2008 07:19 PM

Honest Eats is our newest seasonal recipe blog by Eric Robertson of Souped Up Cafe.

Heirloom winter squash are to autumn what Rainier cherries are to summer. They are an emblem of October and we’re lucky here in Seattle to have access to so many varieties. Getting a hold of some locally grown pumpkins and cooking them up to highlight their natural, earthy sweetness will really bring a seasonal flair to your kitchen everyone can appreciate, not to mention a chance to show off your culinary prowess. More...

Why do you commute by bus/bike/MAX? Answer to win gift certificates.

ECOMETRO EDITORS / Wednesday, November 12, 2008 04:50 PM

The organization SmartTrips is holding a competition for anyone who works downtown. Email or comment in their blog with your reasons for walking, biking, busing, MAXing or carpooling (anything but driving a car alone) and you could win certificates to Hot Lips, Bike Gallery, and more.

SmartTrips also offers a commuter packet for anyone who works downtown, delivered free to your work with a gift. You can request maps, bus schedules, bike maps, and specially tailored information such as women on bikes. We ordered one and were really impressed with the information. It gathered all the materials we've meant to pick up over the years in one envelope, and came with a bar of chocolate. More...

One of the best and easiest options is to switch from incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs. They use about a third of the electricity and last up to 10 years, which can save as much as $33 in energy costs over the life of the bulb. More...

Craft Thursdays: Seat covering rain ponchos for winter biking with kids

ECOMETRO EDITORS / Thursday, November 6, 2008 01:26 PM

We spotted this easy project on BikePortland's family biking page, which is fast becoming a solid resource for families on a roll. The latest blog describes several methods and products for keeping kids warm, dry, and happy through the rain and cold whether using bike seats, bakfiets (at right), or trailers. The easiest is the author's own DIY project, a converted poncho that she fitted with elastic to stay put over the mounted high-back child seat. Materials needed are a poncho, elastic or shock cord, and a small reflective triangle, which you can purchase at one of our bike merchants with a coupon. Happy riding!

Keep an eye out for our family biking blog, which also involves a bakfiet. Coming soon! (Image: Flickr/santanartistMore...
