Green to the Last Bite...of Eggs. Recipe: Bacon, Mushroom, and Spinach Frittata

BECKI WALKER / Wednesday, May 13, 2009 05:25 PM

Becki Walker writes about farmers market manners and crafts recipes. Search our database for a farmers market near you, and leave your review.

As we scavenge our cupboards and refrigerators in search of the next great meal, we often overlook some of the more common ingredients in our pantries.  We pass over these foodstuffs because they seem less glamorous than other treats lurking in our kitchens, but that doesn’t make them any less tasty. With a little creativity, you can create a classy meal out of nearly anything, including today's special ingredient: eggs. Pickled, frozen, aged, and sauteed. More...

Green to the Last Bite… of the Meat at the Market.

BECKI WALKER / Thursday, May 7, 2009 09:01 PM

Becki Walker writes about food and crafts recipes. In this Fridays series, she examines the culture of farmers markets.

Nearly everyone’s heard (probably over and over again) that one of the best ways to lower your carbon footprint and love the planet is to eat less meat, especially red meat.  Eating less meat’s better for your health, too – when you’ve removed meat from your plate, there’s more room for foods lower in fat and calories, like fruits and vegetables.  But what if, even after trying to be the best environmentalist ever, you’ve still got a craving for something fleshy? More...

Green Question: How Can I Tell What Fish is the Best Choice?

ECOMETRO EDITORS / Friday, April 3, 2009 05:01 PM

Information on your seafood can be unclear and just plain fishy, so turn to a reliable source such as The Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch. They provide these free resources to help you determine which fish is from the best sources and is not overfished. Use these at the grocery store or restaurant.
  • Select a Seafood Pocket Guide Our longtime favorites, these handy guides are easy to print and carry in your wallet, or if you own our books you'll find a tear-out copy inside. Select the guide for your region and give copies to dinner dates.
  • Mobile.SeafoodWatch.org Use your phone to view the Seafood Pocket Guides online.
  • iPhone Seafood Watch App A free application for iPhone and iPod Touch users, with Pocket Guide information and much, much more.
  • Text the Fish Phone Send a text message to 30644 with FISH and the name of your fish in question. Save the number in your phonebook for easy reference. The Blue Ocean Institute will text back its assessment and better alternatives if your fish is at risk. For example, we texted "fish bluefin tuna" and received this message: "Atlantic bluefine tuna (RED) significant environmental concerns; endangered species; HEALTH ADVISORY: High mercury contamination."
