Oakland has always been outside my everyday radius, even though it’s just a few miles from home.  Recently, on a lovely sunny weekday with several hours to fill, I decided to head for Oakland City Center and the nearby Historic District.

Within an amazingly short BART ride, there I was, smack in the middle of “new” Oakland.  I was impressed with the juxtaposition of modern high rises melding with 19th century landmarks – Beaux Arts City Hall, Rotunda Building, Tribune Building and the Art Deco  Financial Building. More...

Carbon Light Day Tripping: The Berkeley Marina

I’ve always had a special connection with vast expanses of water and don’t think I could be happy living far from the Pacific.  I love the idea of spending a long day on the coast, but can’t always get away.  Luckily I’ve discovered an alternative much nearer to home, just a short bus ride from downtown Berkeley.

The Berkeley Marina satisfies my water-gazing-while-walking need.  By following a paved path that circumnavigates the entire marina complex I feel the wind on my face, smell a bit of salt-tinged air and ogle million-dollar views.

One of the largest and oldest yacht harbors in the East Bay, the Berkeley Marina knows the value in stretching beyond the boating community, providing recreation and learning opportunities in a number of time-worthy attractions. More...
