The best part of embracing local living is meeting the people around you. Meet other locals at places like the neighborhood farmers market, where you’re more likely to chat than in a store.
Consider taking your next vacation locally. Airplanes have significant CO2 emissions (find out how much at carboncounter.org).
Outings & Outdoor Classes
We use Green Routes to plan local trips, locate bike trails, and find great local food in between. Another site for local eating is the Heartland Food Network, which celebrates our best foods by hosting chef demonstrations and gatherings at participating restaurants every third Thursday.
If you’re an angler, make your tackle box lead-free. Look for “get the lead out” displays at local retailers to purchase fishing gear that doesn’t cause lead poisoning in our loons and eagles. Become a monitor for your favorite lake.
If you want to learn a new outdoor skill for any season Boreal Explorations offers trips in Voyageurs National Park including kayaking, cross-country skiing and women’s only trips. Big groups don’t need to rent limos or drive in the summer — instead have a biking party for up to 16 people in the human powered trolley the Pedal Pub.
