On Earth Day, the Seattle Mariners are set to host the first carbon-neutral baseball game in major league history.

The Mariners are working with Seattle City Light-- and the utility’s Green Up program to power Safeco Field with wind energy all day April 22. Additionally, the team is purchasing carbon offsets for all its travel and operations that day while also promoting waste reduction and recycling.

As the team does its best to beat the Baltimore Orioles, it will be demonstrating what can be accomplished with environmentally sensitive operations.

The Mariners have made a sincere move to increase their sustainability practices, including a switch to biodegradable cups and plans for an energy conservation audit at the stadium.

The NRDC created a Greening Advisor for Major League Baseball teams and acknowledged the Minnesota Twins as a team at the forefront of environmental responsibility on the field.
