Monday, Friends of Trees Helps You Dress Up Your Sidewalk
Friends of Trees hosts a slideshow to help you pick the right tree for your sidewalk planting area--that much neglected patch of planting area that can make a neighborhood greener. If you haven't been to their website yet, pop over to view their listings of local trees complete with a tool that takes into account the width of your planting space and whether power lines are present to give you selections for the appropriate tree. For $75 you can have a tree and follow-up help, but order deadlines are coming up!

From Friends of Trees:
On Monday, Oct. 29, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friends of Trees' longtime
volunteer and tree expert Jim Gersbach will give a slide show at
Sunnyside Elementary School, 3421 SE Salmon, to help people choose which
trees to plant in their yards and parking strips this year. The slide
show will be especially helpful for all who live in the following
Portland neighborhoods with upcoming deadlines for initiating the tree
order process:

Nov. 15 interest deadline for the Jan. 19 planting in
Eastmoreland and Reed

Nov. 22 interest deadline for the Jan. 26 planting in
Laurelhurst and Sunnyside

Nov. 29 interest deadline for the Feb. 2 planting in Arbor
Lodge, Cathedral Park, Kenton, Portsmouth, St. Johns, and University
Park

Nov. 30 interest deadline for the Feb. 23 planting in
Alameda,
Beaumont-Wilshire, Concordia, Vernon and Woodlawn

Dec. 3 interest deadline for the Feb. 16 planting in Boise,
Eliot, Humboldt, King, Overlook, and Piedmont

Dec. 7 interest deadline for the March 1 planting in Argay,
Parkrose, Parkrose Heights, Russell and Wilkes

Jan. 3 interest deadline for the March 8 plantings in Center,
Cully, Montavilla, Roseway and Rose City Park

The slide show will also help people in these Vancouver, Wa.
neighborhoods with the following tree interest deadlines:

Nov. 15 interest deadline for the Jan. 19 planting in
Bennington, Cascade Highlands, Cascade South East, and Mountainview

Dec. 5 interest deadline for the Feb. 9 planting in Father
Blanchet Park, Marrion, North Garrison Heights, and Vancouver Heights

Dec. 27 interest deadline for the March 1 planting in Burnt
Bridge Creek, Image, and North Image

Jan. 14 interest deadline for the March 15 planting in
Arnada, Carter Park, Central Park, Hough, Lincoln, Rose Village, Shumway, and West Hazel Dell

To begin the tree order process, click on "Order Street Trees" at Friends of Trees and follow the simple three-step directions. If you have questions as you place your order, the neighborhood coordinator listed for your neighborhood on our web site planting schedule can assist you. Costs of trees vary by neighborhood depending on the grants Friends of Trees has secured to subsidize the actual $160 cost of the tree planting and follow-up monitoring. All homeowners are required to pay no more than $75 per tree, but donations to cover the remaining $85 in costs are welcome.
