"Until we can make the market see all the costs of unsustainable farming, and until we learn how to temper its obsessive focus on ever greater efficiencies, market-driven sustainability will fail."

Mother Jones has an interesting article on food titled Spoiled: Organic and Local Is So 2008, which questions the very sustainability of sustainable foods, especially against rising debt and shrinking spending. Americans spend very little on food, compared to the world average, but can the majority be convinced to pay more? And if much of the world has already set aside more for--or maxed out--their food budget, will they support organic farming systems that result in more expensive food?
