Once you’ve made your home as energy efficient as possible you can purchase power generated by wind farms, geothermal, or biomass. PGE customers can purchase 100% clean wind power for $3.50 per 200kW, or renewable power from wind, geothermal, and biomass for $ 0.008 per kW. Small businesses have the same options.
In Eugene, customers of EWEB can sign up for the Green-E certified Greenpower program by matching 100% of usage at $0.01 kW, or by purchasing 100kW blocks at $1.50 each. Emerald People’s Utility District customers can purchase either 100% or 50% wind energy for $.08 per kW, which is an estimated $10 or $5 extra per month for the average home. Pacific Power customers can sign up for as little as $1.95 extra per month.
An all-natural option is a properly placed tree, which can reduce heating costs by shielding wind and can reduce air conditioning costs by up to 50%. See arborday.org/trees/treeguide for a guide to where to install trees. Friends of Trees is a great local resource with local events and tree care tips.
