The best part of embracing local living is the people around you. Meet other locals at places like the neighborhood farmers market, where you’re ten times more likely to chat than in a store. And consider taking your next vacation locally. Airplanes have significant CO2emissions (find out how much at carboncounter.org).

Outdoor Classes

Our own Lake Merritt is the nation’s oldest national wildlife refuge, and a great place to go for a jog or bike ride. (See our bike section to get you started). Kayaking is easy and safe, and you can go out in the Bay or stay near the shore. Group trips are available the first and third Friday from June-September for $20 including gear at Waterfront Action. REI Schooloffers one day group trips to get you started in sports like kayaking and hiking (some hikes welcome dogs), or learn outdoor photography. Women-only classes are available, too.
