Fashion: Local Boutiques

We all wear something, every day. Look for bamboo, hemp, 100% organic cotton, and newer materials like soy fiber the next time you need to go shopping. Avoid non-organic cotton. Better yet, explore vintage and consignment shops. Greening your closet is a small change with a major impact, with the bonus of wearing your environmental ethos on your sleeve.

We’re fortunate to have the Oakland-based Organic Exchange, an international charitable organization working to expand organic cotton production. Our neighborhood boutiques are going green with local and national lines for all styles. Men and women can find 100% organic cotton Loomstate jeans as well as Edun clothing and local designers at August (5410 College Ave, Oakland).  Select the sustainable choices at boutiques like Magnet (2508 San Pablo Ave, Berkeley), and Two Star Dog (10th St in Berkeley) most of which carry local designer Del Forte Denim.

Go organic for your base layers with EcoMerino wool socks by Teko at REI (1338 San Pablo Ave, Berkeley), and 100% organic cotton underwear and tees can be found in the sustainable line at American Apparel (2301 Telegraph Ave). Find local designers such as Kelley Designs, which uses Soysilk to knit and crochet hats, at oaklandunwrapped.com. And don’t forget all the great vintage and consignment shops in The East Bay for the latest (again) styles.

Can’t find just the right outfit locally? Here’s our favorite online ecoboutiques: Men and women: thegreenloop.com, sameunderneath.com, twice-shy.com. Women: btcelements.com, pangaya.com, and cocosshoppe.com.
