Reducing consumption, buying things that last, buying used and recycling all your waste are great goals that are more and more achievable, particularly with the amazing resources in the East Bay. In addition to this book, check out the Bay Area Green Business Program  for a list of businesses in the region who have been certified for conserving resources and following good recycling practices.
Recycling and Reuse
Alameda County has a goal of 75% diversion from landfills by 2010. To reach this goal, we will all need to reduce waste and recycle as much as possible. Visit the on-line Recycling Wizard at StopWaste.Org/recycle or call the recycling hotline at 1-877-STOPWASTE to find out where to recycle or reuse just about anything. You can also download a free copy of the Alameda County Recycling Guide for a list of what can be placed curbside including shampoo bottles and junk mail. For the recycling hotline in Contra Costa County call 925-335-1225.

Food scraps and food soiled paper products can now be recycled curbside with yard trimmings — contact your City recycling program (listing at StopWaste.Org) for more information. Bulky waste pick up for items such as mattresses, TVs and appliances is now available year round. To make an appointment in Oakland call 510-613-8710 and in Berkeley call 510-981-7270. Emeryville residents should visit ci.emeryville.ca.us/community/environment.html. To find a free hazardous waste disposal facility (three in Alameda County in Oakland, Hayward and Livermore), see household-hazwaste.org or call 1-800-606-6606. The site also has an extensive list of recipes for homemade alternatives to toxic household products for cleaning, air fresheners and pest control.
