Mother's Day is May 10th, are you prepared? As always, we promote giving the gift of a donation or experience instead of giving stuff.

Why not give mom a sea turtle nest sponsorship ($45) from the Sea Turtle Restoration Project? She'll get a certificate, a photo of the nest, and one year subscription to the project.

Kiva is a non-profit that gives micro loans (as low as $25) to the developing world to move lives out of poverty. Pick a project and donate in you mother's name--she'll get updates and can re-gift the loan when it is paid back by the original entrepreneur.

Group with someone else to give your mom and 7+ of her friends the gift of a discussion group. The Northwest Earth Institute sends booklets with reading and group prompts for courses including Choices for Sustainable Living and Voluntary Simplicity. Course guides are $20 each.

Baggu is a California company that makes reusable bags in bright colors and ripstop nylon that folds into a small pouch. Send her a special edition MOM bag to give her a reason to talk about you at the grocery store. ($10)

Encourage mom to ditch paper towels in favor of washable dish rags, or applaud her if she already has, with this cheeky dish towel. Waterbased inks. ($9.99)

We mentioned Figs & Ginger in our Holiday Gift Guide for their recycled content jewelry and processing. They're back with the Fawn Family necklace, available with one to four fawns, depending on the number of bambis in the family. ($70-79)

The cover of this recycled paper journal is embedded with wildflower seeds so mom can fill the pages, then plant the cover and watch it grow. ($25)

For moms on bikes, send a bike basket in a crochet pattern. A strap attaches to turn the removable basket into a shopping basket or picnic tote. Available in green, white, and black. ($70)

As always, you can shop locally with our coupon book by searching our directory using keywords from the popular tags column at left. Take mom out to dinner or brunch with a restaurant coupon, and find an outdoor recreation adventure or arts & culture night out.
