Our own Metro Transit offers many ways to commute and support renewable energy.
They’ve pledged to make 150 buses hybrid-electric by 2012, and have biodiesel and zero-emissions light rail options as well. You can plan your trip from start to finish with the TripPlanner. Metro Transit also offers a site to find a car or vanpool.
The Commuter Challenge takes place from April to June and offers anyone who commutes, even once, by public transit, walking, carpooling or biking a chance to win prizes such as iPods or flat screen TVs. Local gift certificates are given to participants, too, so if you’ve been considering an alternative to driving, the Challenge is a great time to start. Encourage your workplace to join in, too. Metro Transit estimates the average Twin Cities area commuter generates about 2.6 tons of greenhouse gas every year by driving alone to work, and that’s only for one person! Start by changing your own commuting habits, and then encourage family and friends to come along for the ride.
