Clothing is one thing everyone can agree on — we all wear something, every day. Look for bamboo, hemp, 100% organic cotton, and newer materials like soy fibers. Better yet, explore vintage and consignment shops. Avoid non-organic cotton. Greening your closet is a small change with a major impact, and the bonus of wearing your environmental ethos on your sleeve.
Local fashion is getting greener. Find 100% organic cotton at Certified Jean or get Loomstate jeans at Les Amis (3420 Evanston Ave N) or Oslo’s (1519 Queen Anne Ave N). An alternative is the Eco line from Levi’s (The Levi’s Store, 1500 6th Ave in Seattle). San Francisco based designer Margaret O’Learymakes luxurious knits, ask for the bamboo and organic cotton lines (2025 1st Ave). Find more NW ecodesigners like sameunderneath and Del Forte Denim at La Rousse (430 Virginia St). Buy organic for your basic layers with EcoMerino wool socks by Teko available at REI (222 Yale Ave N), and 100% organic cotton underwear and tees from the sustainable line at American Apparel (200 Broadway E & 4345 University Ave NE). The newest sustainable outdoor designer on the block is the chic Nau (575 Bellevue Sq).
