Going vegan like Oprah? Try these top vegan cooking blogs for any occasion.

We've all heard about Oprah's 21 Day Cleanse, which calls for veganism. But for the  newbies, the limited recipes listed on her website are not going to cut it for 21 days or longer. Vegans, thankfully, have started a slew of excellent online food blogs. I've rounded up my favorites to take you through your day, from lunch to dinner party, and from  BBQ to birthday.

To Impress the Dinner Guests
Sassy and recently married with vegan cupcakes (you'll have to wade through the wedding posts), the blog Hezbollah Tofu exists to torment Anthony Bourdain, who said in Kitchen Confidential, "Vegetarians, and their Hezbollah-like splinter faction, the vegans, are a persistent irritant to any chef worth a damn." Hezbollah Tofu responds by taking his meatiest, fanciest recipes and making them vegan and delicious. Roulade of Wild Seitan, anyone? Contributors are encouraged to send in their own recipes, making this site a frequently updated delight and source of vegan cooking inspiration.

For the Beginner

Vegan.com brings the Top Ten Recipes of 2008 with tried and true, easy to make recipes. Dishes are pulled from popular vegan cookbooks and range from baked ziti to root beer float cupcakes.

For the Birthday Party and Family Dinners
What's more impressive than a vegan cake? How about a vegan Star Wars cake complete with Yoda cupcakes? Give Peas a Chance whips up family friendly recipes, usually made to serve 4.





From the Food Writer, for the Weight Watchers
At first a little difficult to navigate, the blog Notes From the Vegan Feast Kitchen gets easier once you scroll down to the recipe pages. Strawberry blintzes and low-fat corn butter should start your morning off right. Writer Bryanna Clark, author of 8 vegan cookbooks, occasionally ranks her food on the Weight Watchers point system.

For the Potluck and Lunches
The vegan laptop lunches at Vegan Homemade make lunch hour look fun. For potluck or picnic, the Southern-Style Dolmades with Tahini Sauce will bring a bright dash of color. See the blog roll for more vegan cooking blogs than you can shake a spoon at.

For the Backyard BBQ
Bring a little spice with easy to make Mexican Peppers from Happy Herbivore, a food journal of athletic vegans who avoid anything hydrogenated or overly processed.





For the College Student
Feeding yourself in college is difficult enough, and adding veganism is one more assignment for overworked students. Enter the 20 year old blogger at Ruby Red Vegan, a cute blog which takes on both french toast and study snacks. A+.

For the Cooking Show Lover
Vegan TV existed, briefly. The archives at The Post Punk Kitchen give cooking lessons and culture lessons all at once. Made up of a team primarily of women, the show is on hold, possibly to put out more books by creator and co-host Isa Moskowitz. She is something of a vegan queen as the author of the popular cookbooks Vegan with a Vengeance, Veganomicon, and Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World, one of my personal favorites.

From the Men, For the Beer Lover
Bring on Hot Knives, a duo of hipsters in Los Angeles who
"believe in cheap groceries, cooking with high alcohol content beer and free leisure." The hot pink website, frequent beer reviews and snappy writing are now occasionally paired with videos. Though they occasionally delve into cheese and other dairy, the majority of recipes are vegan and frequently seasonal.

The Best of the Best
Saving the best for last, you'll rely on super blogger Vegan Dad, who logs each of the scrumptious meals he makes for his family including kid friendly mini meatloaf and mini corndawgs. For the more advanced palate, try Chili Garlic Tempeh Spring Rolls. Each recipe is clearly broken up into ingredients and method, and accompanied by a beautiful picture. Even better, he tags recipes by type and ingredients, so you can search for tomatos or Asian food, depending on your whim. Expect this blog to really heat up over the summer months when he is free from teaching.
